Bali Diving - Toyapakah, Nusa Penida; Jack Point, Nusa Lembongan

First Dive, Toyapakah, off the island Nusa Penida

The first dive was originally scheduled to be Manta Point (to see the Manta Rays...).  But the conditions weren't very good.  The surface conditions and currents were too high for this dive, so the dive op (Crystal Divers) bailed on the dive.  It was a good call, as ALL of the other dive ops in the area bailed on this dive and went to other places.  Yes, I was disappointed.  But the diving was still fabulous!  So instead of Manta Rays, I got to see quite a diverse reef.  And there was even a very noticeable thermocline.

Second Dive, Drift Dive at Jack Point, off the island Nusa Lembongan

The second dive was over an incredibly diverse reef near Nusa Lembongan.  (We stayed a night on Nusa Lembongan on our trip to Bali.  Check out this page for a full "non-diving" trip report.)  This was a drift dive, and the current was pretty swift.  The highlight of this dive was a visit from a Whitetip Reef Shark.  It was beautiful!  It swam against the current and passed by us on our dive, and I'd estimate it's size at between 4 and 6 feet.  Very cool!  Not much picture taking...but I got some video of the shark and a few other great fish.

All in all my diving was fabulous, and I can't wait to go back to Bali for more diving.  I don't think my pictures were all that great, but they might give you a small sense of the beauty of the two reefs I visited.  I was scheduled to do a second day of diving, but a sinus infection and infected toe (see the Bali Trip page for details) kept me from doing more dives.  Oh well...it just means I have to go back to visit.

There were feather stars all over!

A soft coral/anemone?  Not sure which...

Some clown fish amongst a coral formation.

A "mushroom" coral.

The only nudibranch I saw on the entire trip.

Another feather star.

A view of the reef.

An as-yet-unidentified organism.  Sponge?

Two seastars hanging out.  Not great color...I must have had the Manual White Balance a bit off...

A barrel sponge with a few resident feather stars.

A snail of some sort...

A soft coral.

A ctenophore floating in the water.  This is the first one I've seen in SE Asia.

A sponge formation with a resident feather star.

A coral formation with a "nemo-fish" as my students call it.  No, it's not Nemo...but from the movie.  As I type this, the actual name escapes me.

The divemaster for the day, Tito the Magic Man.  He performed magic tricks on the way to the dive site to keep us entertained.  And he was a great divemaster to boot.
